NETGEAR RAX200 Router

Elegantly mounted on a shelf over the door to the garage and near the center of the house :-).

Like the old one, but a stronger shelf this time (which was a major pain to put up, but I finally achieved shelf :-).

Random things I have discovered about my new NETGEAR RAX200 Router:

It is very disconcerting when the first day you have it fully installed and tweaked, you suddenly have no internet. Turns out this was perfect timing on Comcast's part and had nothing to do with the router.

I'd love to have the features provided by things like DD-WRT, but I've given up expecting them on new routers. The main thing I miss is the DNS server for the local network, but I can run my own DNS on my linux box. This web page was very handy getting that setup so I didn't have to sort through the 8000 pages of documentation for relevant bits :-). I can assign fixed IPs to devices I want in DNS, so at least I don't have to worry about dynamically updating my zone files.

I was also convenient to ssh into the old router and ask what IP Comcast assigned, but I guess I can use the Netgear DDNS service for that one bit of information. I haven't found any way to automate logging in to the router to download info with tools like curl or lynx.

I got very flaky wifi on some devices while I was configuring things and changing obscure options. I don't think the APPLY button works too well sometimes. Rebooting the router made everything better, and as long as I don't fiddle with the configuration any longer, it seems to keep working fine.
