Openbuilds Hacking

Before actually buying a lot of openbuilds parts, I figured it would be nice to 3D print some test parts to see exactly how things might fit together and decide which parts I actually want to buy, and which I can make.

My brain also has a big hole where using a GUI cad program goes (I can't seem to get the hang of any of them — I think emacs has used up all my keystroke storage), so playing with dummy parts will be a lot simpler than getting my head wrapped around a cad program :-).

Anyway, after doing lots of web searches for openbuilds cad files and converting things between various formats, I finally got a bunch of stl files to print (with more to come no doubt).

openbuilds-angle-corner-connector.stl
Printed OK without support.
openbuilds-mini-vplate.stl
openbuilds-solid-vwheel.stl
Printed OK without support.
vslot20x20x80.scad, vslot20x20.scad
It took forever to print 4 of these 80mm high, but they came out nice. The openscad module was generated by inkscape from a extrusion silhouette image.
openbuilds-gantry-plate.stl
This is about the biggest piece I can print on my solidoodle 2.
openbuilds-6mm-spacer.stl, openbuilds-eccentric-spacer.stl
The eccentric spacer has a bit of a thin wall problem, but should be OK just for playing with putting parts together.
nema17.stl
Not a faithful nema17 replica, but an easily printable block that takes up the same space and has holes I can tap for M3 screws and an M5 screw to substitute for the motor shaft.
nema17-bracket.scad
Not an openbuilds part, but my own design for a bracket to mount a nema 17 motor with optional left and right angle supports.
stacked-idler-bracket.scad
My design for a bracket to hold an M5 bolt at the corner of the printer which I can stack two GT2 idler pulleys on.
carriage-belt-clamp.scad
My adapted design for a belt adjuster to be printed on the back of the X carriage. Inspired by GT2 Belt Wedge Tensioner (but rebuilt with the wedge hole rotated 90 degrees and some structure added to slide in a slot). The wedge that clips on the belt is GT2 Belt Wedge (no redesign).
carriage-clamp.scad
A better version of the belt mounting system with smaller parts I can position between the wheels. Both fixed and adjustable belt mounts are provided.
